Borroloola Community Bus Service
The McArthur River Mine (MRM) Community Benefits Trust in partnership with the Northern Territory Government and the Mawurli and Wirriwangkuma Aboriginal Corporation (MAWA) have committed to a 12-month pilot of a community bus service in Borroloola, extending to nearby locations including Police Lagoon and Robinson River.
The program seeks to address several ongoing issues in the community including (i) no existing public transport within the township (ii) limited access to private transport (iii) limited means of accessing critical activities such as employment, shopping, government services, health facilities, social interaction, etc (iv) lack of options for local workers residing in town camps.
A competitive tender was run in March 2020 and the Mawurli and Wirriwangkuma Aboriginal (MAWA) Corporation was selected as the preferred service provider. The program is expected to commence in 2021.
In response to the MRM Community Benefits Trust’s initiative, the Northern Territory Government have contributed $337,500 (excl. GST) in funding under the Remote Passenger Transport Program.
